Description

  • A Large Campanian Red-figured Bell Krater, attributed to the Painter of B.M. F 229
  • terracotta
  • Height 20 1/4 in. 51.4 cm.
painted with two Oscan warriors, Eros, and a lady, the warrior on the left resting his foot on an Ionic capital, a shield with prominent gorgoneion emblem at his feet, the central warrior wearing a breast-plate of three disks, the lady wearing serpentine bracelets and tripartite pendant earrings, Eros bringing her a necklace, the reverse with three warriors and a lady, two warriors with spears or standards, and two with shields at their feet, the lady (an Amazon or Medea?) standing in an animated pose and wearing a short chiton and Phrygian cap, the details in added white, yellow, and brown.

Condition

Generally very good, but there is a large chip approximately five-inches long and 1/2-inch deep on the rim on the side not shown in the catalogue. Minor nicks and abrasions in areas.
