Description

  • A Campanian Red-Figured Bell Krater, attributed to the Astarita Painter
  • terracotta
  • Height 17 5/8 in. 44.8 cm.
painted with a departure scene showing two young Oscan warriors facing a woman holding an oinochoe and offering them a cup, the warriors holding spears and wearing crested helmets with three plumes, the warrior on the right leaning on his finely-decorated shield and wearing greaves and short decorated tunic, his companion without greaves and wearing a plain tunic, three draped youths on the reverse, the details in added white and brown.

Condition

Very good and intact except for small chips on the foot and one chip on the rim visible in the catalogue photograph. Minor hairline crack in the foot. Much of the white appears to have been re-painted over ancient traces.
