Description

  • An Attic Red-Figured Bell Krater, attributed to the Toya Painter
  • terracotta
  • Height 14 3/8 in. 36.5 cm.
painted with the figure of a goddess, probably Artemis, wearing a long embroidered short-sleeved chiton, cloak, earrings, and rayed diadem, standing and holding flaming torches, and flanked on her right by seated Apollo holding a laurel bough, a goddess (Leto?) behind him, and on her left by seated Dionysos holding a thyrsos, a goddess (Ariadne or Semele?) behind him, three draped conversing youths on the reverse, the details in added white, pink, and golden brown.

Condition

Excellent and intact. There is a small chip on the rim, approximately 1/2 inch long, which appears to have occurred before firing in antiquity. A few very minor scratches and nicks elsewhere on the rim and foot.
