Catalogue Note

Ornamented with a sundry of beautifully crafted inlaid ornament, this tall case clock is an outstanding example of the early Neoclassic design in New York state. An equally inlaid clock, in the collection of the New York State Museum, is labeled Wood & Taylor Cabinetmakers Florida for Robert Wood and James S. Taylor (John L. Scherer, New York Furniture at the New York State Museum (Alexandria, VA: Highland House Publishers, 1983), pp. 36-37). It is also possible that the second partner was Jacob Taylor, who is listed in the 1820 census living in Goshen, New York.

Four other Wood & Taylor clocks are known (see Sotheby Parke Bernet, Inc., New York, Fine Americana, April 30-May 3, 1980, sale 4369, lot 1387; Christie's New York, Important American Furniture, Silver and Folk Art, January 18-19, 2002, sale 1003, lot 397; Christie's, New York, Property from the Collection of Mrs. J.
