Catalogue Note
Since New York cabinetmakers adopted the ball and claw foot relatively early as compared to other cities, a Queen Anne slipper foot high chest of drawers is an uncommon find; although, slipper feet high chests of drawers, when found, are almost exclusively from either New York or Rhode Island. A maple example with a similar cyma-curved skirt and slipper feet was sold at Sotheby’s, New York, September 26, 2008, lot 42, but its straighter and longer cabriole legs indicate its Rhode Island origins as compared to the more curved cabriole legs of this New York example. A similar example from New York with five graduated drawers in the upper section and a long drawer over two square drawers flanking a central rectangular one and all over a curved skirt and cabriole legs is in the New-York Historical Society (1870.8).
