Description

  • Mahogany
  • Height 27 1/2 in. by Width 54 1/2 in. by Depth 26 in.
Marble top cracked and repaired. Nail holes in rails indicate the table had a wooden top for a period of time.

Provenance

Israel Sack, Inc., New York;
Sotheby's, New York, The Collection of Diane and Norman Bernstein, January 22, 2006, sale 8160, lot 177.

Literature

Albert Sack, The New Fine Points of Furniture, (New York: Crown Publishers, 1993), p. 272, described as a "Masterpiece."

Condition

Refinished; marble top possibly associated with base; Albert Sack has said that he bought this table from a Massachusetts home where the owners had attached a later wooden plank to the top because the top had unfortunately broken. The top with this table was found in the basement of this Massachusetts home broken in several pieces. The Sack restoration firm repaired the marble and sold it to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Bernstein in its current condition. The side rails and legs have nail holes and remnants of hide glue indicating another top was once present; proper front right knee return replaced; knee returns replaced on both sides; secondary wood: white pine. Please note this is constructed primarily out of cherrywood, not mahogany as stated in the catalogue.

Catalogue Note

A marble-top pier table similar to this one and possibly from the same shop sold in these rooms, The Collection of Alice and Murray Braunfeld, January 17, 2004, sale 7961, lot 1267. Though made with carved knees and claw-and-ball feet, that table displays the same graduated moldings, a similar cyma-shaped skirt, and a marble top apparently from the same quarry that displays identical color, figuring and rounded corners.
