Catalogue Note
This extraordinary canvaswork picture was loaned to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, 1942. It has descended in the family of Anna Woodbury Swett to Adelaide Jackson Winsor, and hence to the present owner.
Anna Woodbury was born in Beverly, Massachusetts October 6, 1728. She was orphaned and lived with her uncle, the Reverend John Barnard, minister of the first church in Marblehead and his wife. Anna married Samuel Swett (1729-1793) in 1748-1750.
According to the Museum's records, information provided by the Swett family stated "this piece of work was done by my grandmo ... her marriage, which took place in 1750. It was said to have always hung in her chamber and from my earliest recollection it hung in my mother's. The foliage in the upper left hand corner was originally green. Given to me by my sister Mary. Feby. 1876. J.B. S., Jr. (John Barnard Swett, Jr.)".
A full family genealogy will accompany this lot.
The Museum of Fine Arts Boston also has a chair seat worked by Anna Woodbury (MFS 43.1331)
