Catalogue Note
The inscription reads "Spirit of the Times cup sailed for in Buzzard's Bay August 5, 1881 owing to fog ordered resailed by the Regatta Committee October 22, 1881 by the Gracie and Mischief over New York Yacht Club Course won by Gracie by 10 minutes 14 seconds Captain Charles R. Flint". The regatta for two $500 cups presented by Club member E. A. Buck was originally off New Bedford, but the fog was so thick that only the schooner Halcyon was a clear winner. The race was resailed by Gracie and Mischief on October 22 to determine the winner of the second cup. For more about this regatta, see John Parkinson, Jr., The History of The New York Yacht Club, Volume 1, p. 102.
