Catalogue Note
Although modeled in 1880, no bronzes of Piping Pan were cast during the sculptor's life. The plaster model was exhibited many times, including at an 1892 retrospective exhibition of the Society of American Artists and the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo (where it won the Silver Medal). After St. Gaudens' death in 1913, his widow Annette St. Gaudens, authorized the casting of three life-size bronzes (approximately 43 inches in height) and four reductions (20 inches in height). The present cast is one of the latter
