Catalogue Note

François Flameng (1856–1923) was a highly acclaimed and popular painter of late nineteenth and early twentieth century France. He was best known for his portraits of celebrities (Queen Alexandra, consort of King Edward VII, Auguste Rodin and the wife of Sir Joseph Duveen, Elsie Salomon Duveen among them) and historical events (the battles of World War I were a specialty).  Flameng's close circle of artist friends included painters John Singer Sargent and Jean-Léon Gérôme.
