Condition

SURFACE: in good condition; there are a few scattered irregularities to surface, mostly all of them at lower right quadrant--they are not particulalry noticeable and this does not detract from the aesthetic of the work and pigment retention is good in these spots UNDER ULTRA VIOLET: scattered areas of repaint--largest in sky at center (about 4 by 3 in.), upper center in sky and at upper and lower right corners; a few scattered spots of inpaint in some of the areas of surface irregularities mentioned above

Catalogue Note

The Temple of the Sibyl in Tivoli, near Rome and the waterfalls nearby, were very popular subjects for other 19th Century American painters as well, among them Thomas Cole and Sanford Robinson Gifford.  The subject proved one of Cropsey's favorites and he depicted it more then fifteen times throughout his career.
