Condition

Condition Report, Alvarez Fine Art Services, Inc. (4/1/2014): Overall this watercolor on paper is in good condition and does not present tears, paper losses, or planar distortions. Surface abrasions above center and in the bottom-right quadrant are intentional and should be considered a part of the artist's technique to create highlights. Visually, the paper is clean and fresh in appearance. Faint discoloration at the bottom-left corner is from dirt caked on the surface during the execution of the painting, and slight discoloration on the reverse is from a former mount but is of no concern. Overall the media is very well preserved and does not exhibit signs of fading or paint loss. This work of art does not require conservation treatment.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

As the race (fed by the Brandywine River) flows through Brinton's Mill, the part that exits the mill is called the "Tail Race". Wyeth often painted along this quiet stretch of water with the many tree roots clinging to the bank.
