Catalogue Note
The present work depicts the family of James Brown—a prominent New York banker. It relates to an oil painting of the same title in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Johnson likely executed it after the painting as a commission from a relative of the Brown family. A third version of the same subject is in the collection of the de Young Museum in San Francisco, California.
