Catalogue Note

According to Will South, "Guy Rose painted a number of small panel pieces while at Giverny where he resided at the Hotel Baudy from July through January of 1891. The composition of the present untitled painting shares a similar configuration to the work of this period with its gently sloping hill and row of distant trees in the distance. The surface texture and palette likewise reflect his tentative explorations in the then-more-modern idiom of Impressionism and correspond stylistically to this early phase in his career. On the reverse of this panel is a briskly painted horizontal landscape evidencing a moment of bold plein-air experimentation."

"This painting was originally a gift (one of two) made to Caroline Badham-Preyer at the time both she and Rose were residents of New York City in 1893. According to both family lore and a surviving early letter, Guy Rose had romantic feelings toward Miss Badham, and thus the gifts."
