blued octagonal barrel with fore-sight, top flat marked PATENTED DEC. 17 1861 / MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS' ILION, N.Y., serial number 8224 on underside of barrel, inspector's letters S on left-side barrel and frame, letter A on butt-strap, and letters B and R on brass trigger-guard, C 72 stamped on frame's left-side below cylinder, oil-finished walnut grips
