.50 caliber, round barrel with fore and rear-sights, breech marked Wm PALMER / PATENT / DECEMBER 22. 1863, inspector's cartouche MM on left side of stock, marked again MM adjacent to saddle-ring, and on comb adjacent to butt-plate, case-hardened lock-plate dated 1865 and marked U.S. / E.G. LAMSON & CO / WINDSOR. VT, color case-hardened barrel band, hammer, trigger-guard, and butt-plate, oil-finished walnut stock

Recognized as the first bolt action metallic cartridge system arm adopted for issue by the U.S. Ordinance. Using rear interupted screw thread lugs in principle similar to those used in American artillery breeches and some bolt action rifles of the 20th century.
