Very good condition for objects of this type and age. Age crack between the legs on reverse of integrally-carved plinth of figure with upturned head. Marks, nicks, scratches, abrasions, and flaking pigment consistent with age and ritual handling. Old cavity to the face of the figure with upturned head, patinated over with kaolin. Figure with upturned head is slightly off-balance. Exceptionally fine rubbed medium brown patina with crusty white kaolin.

Catalogue Note

This finely-carved pair of miniature Songye figures is covered in white kaolin, a rare treatment in Songye statuary.  Showing the imaginative range of Songye design, one figure features a head turned to the left, while the other gazes skyward, the head in a distorted position with chin pointed dramatically upwards.
