Catalogue Note

The Sakalava people of Madagascar sculpted large, fully three-dimensional grave post figures to be placed in the proximity of the tombs of important deceased leaders and other persons of high rank. Marked sexual characteristics such as those seen in the Krugier couple symbolized "the process of transition from living to dead, when the elder is reborn as ancestor" (Borgatti 1990: 49).
