with broad diagonal bands of the crocodile earth monster as if rising out of a tunnel in the earth, the massive crested head with long open snout, scrolled brows and powerful segmented reptilian body with tightly bent limbs, the rim molded with a narrow band of repeat stylized profile avian heads.

Condition

Excellent condition, appears intact, has not been over cleaned, nice remains of encrustation on the interior and areas of exterior; good crisp definition of the carved areas.

The Maya earth monster is a continuation of the important  'dragon' of Olmec mythology, a composite saurian creature which is associated with various elements including earth, rain, fire, and agricultural fertility (Coe 1995:83).
