  • Wood
with snarling fanged snouth, flaring nostrils and wideset oval eyes, firmly holding feline-headed staffs at each side, rising up the back and terminating in tripartite plumes, wearing a tunic and broad triple necklace, an opening at the top of the head.

Acquired by present owner's grandfather prior to 1957

Condition

Excellent, intact. Has very minor chip on edge of opening on top, old pressure crack above ear on PL side but overall very good shape. Plug on bottom remaining.

Finely carved wood containers made for lime powder or cinnabar were considered 'elite personal ornaments', of which various styles are known (Bergh 2012: 242-245). This fierce decapitator feline is depicted on various examples, a reference to ritual sacrifice and renewal ceremonies.
