Condition

Overall in fair condition. The lacquered decoration throughout shows a wonderful stylized landscape and the coloration of the palette overall is more saturated that it appears in the catalogue illustration. The panels of the screen each with minor edge nicks and paint losses throughout, which are consistent with age and use of the screen. There are a few areas along the top edge and perimeter of the screen with larger losses, some of which reveal the natural wood with the loss of the lacquered surface, the largest measuring an 1.5 inches in length. The decorative front sides of the panel with a few minor surface scratches, isolated abrasions and minor losses to the lacquer concentrated primarily to the edges and adjacent to the hinges. Each of the four panels present with tight hairline cracks to the lacquer scattered throughout ranging from minor to more severe as seen in the catalogue illustration. As you move from the proper left to the proper right of the screen, there are more concentrated cracks to the lacquered surfaces. The farthest panel on the proper right displays significant cracking throughout that appears to have a prior restoration to stabilize the surface which presents with white coloration in the cracks. The cracks to the lacquer in this panel also reveal the undercoat as the separations to the lacquer are greater. The panel to the proper right with a series of five minor vertical abrasions which with paint transfer of a lighter coloration. The second panel on the proper right with a horizontal surface abrasion measuring eight inches in length beginning at the immediate edge adjacent to the leopard, which is visible in the catalogue illustration. The reverse of the screen is not decorated and with minor nicks, scratches and edge losses. The hinges and hardware all appear original and undisturbed. The screen has nice scale and the landscape motif is executed in wonderful artistic detail.
