  • rosewood and silk

Provenance

Acquired from Robert Isaacson, New York

Condition

Overall very good condition. The wood surfaces with light nicks, dings, and scratches scattered throughout consistent with age and gentle handling. The wood surfaces with some light evidence of sun fading consistent exposure to light. There are areas of minute residue discoloration localized along the bottom edges of each panel, as seen in the catalogue illustration. There are a few scattered tight age cracks to the top edge of the screen across all panels, the largest measuring approximately 2 inches; all presently appear to be stable. With one area of loss to the reverse proper left corner, measuring approximately 2 inches in length which extends approximately 1 inch down the long side of the proper right panel. The proper right front of the right-most panel with a rectangular area of veneer flaking measuring approximately ¾ x ¼ inches, which is adjacent to the immediate lower edge in the center of the panel. The tassels with some minor sun fading and light discolorations throughout, consistent with age. The tassels with some irregularity in length and minor scattered fraying localized to the lower portions of each tassel. The reverse of the screen is not veneered, showing the base wood. The reverse of the screen with some scattered abrasions to the wood. A nice example of the artist's work executed on a satisfying scale and with beautiful coloration in the figuring of the veneer.
