Catalogue Note

This beautiful bronze bust is a very rare model by Charles Cordier, the great French ethnographic sculptor. Probably conceived during his 1858 soujourn in Greece, the model is very similar to his Greque moderne (of which a fine version was sold at Sotheby's on 10 May 2007, lot 15) and is known only in terracotta as a pair to the sculptor's Mauresque d'Alger chantant (sold at Sotheby's on 21 June 1991, lot 130).
