Provenance

Sale: Sotheby's London, 28 March 1990, lot 358

Exhibited

London, The Fine Art Society, Great Cities in the 19th Century, 1985, no. 5, illustrated in the catalogue

Condition

The canvas has been relined. Ultra-violet light reveals scattered thin carefully-applied retouchings primarily addressing lines of hairline craquelure, which are relatively minor compared with the overall size of the work, and some further scattered small spots of retouching. The darker red pigments notably in the lower-right quadrant appear to fluoresce slightly under ultra-violet light however these certainly appear to be the artist's original rather than corresponding to retouching. This painting is in good overall condition, and ready to hang. The colours in reality are subtler, and less of a bright red than in the catalogue illustration. Presented in a decorative gilt rococo-style frame.
