Condition

The panel is flat, stable and uncradled on the reverse. There is a light surface scuff in the architecture of the background in the upper-right quadrant (visible in the catalogue illustration). As is typical for works by van Schendel the old varnish layers fluoresce evenly and quite opaquely under-ultraviolet light making the surface difficult to read; there is a handful of possible minor spots of retouching notably to the leftmost woman however there do not appear to be other significant retouchings. This painting is in good condition, its appearance very good, and it is ready to hang. The colours in reality are less green overall than in the catalogue illustration, with more of a sense of depth. presented in a decorative gilt frame.
