  • Gebirgslandschaft mit Wanderer (The Wanderer)
  • signed and dated A. Piepenhagen 1826 lower left
  • oil on panel
  • 39 by 31cm., 15 1/4 by 12in.

Provenance

Private collection, Germany (since 1965)

Condition

The panel is flat and even with one horizontal cradle bar on the reverse. Ultra-violet light reveals strokes of retouching addressing a vertical circa 10cm thin crack in the upper-left quadrant (visible to the naked eye), a small circa 3 by 3cm area of restoration in a reversed 'C' shape in the upper-right quadrant at the top of the tree, and some minor scattered strokes primarily in the sky. The overall appearance of the work under normal light is good and it is ready to hang. The colours in reality are somewhat richer and deeper than in the catalogue illustration, with somewhat less pink overall. Presented in a simple gilt frame.
