Condition
The artist's sheet, which is of thin tracing paper, has been laid down onto a backing sheet, with some associated minor wrinkles primarily along the lower edge. This in turn is attached to the backboard at points along the edges. There is a handful of scattered very minor tears at the edges of the sheet no more than a couple of millimeters. There are some tiny spots of paint flaking in the hair of the woman in the lower right quadrant. This work is in good overall condition.
Presented framed and under glass with the edges of the sheet visible and not covered by the mat.

Catalogue Note
Executed in 1832. In a letter from Tangier to M Duponchel, Director of the Paris Opera, dated 23 February 1832, Delacroix noted: 'The Jewish women are also very handsome and their dress is most picturesque. I have witnessed a number of their ceremonies...' (Edited by Jean Stewart, Eugène Delacroix, Selected Letters, 1813-1863, 1954, p. 185)
