Description

  • Konstantinos Maleas
  • Naxos
  • signed in Greek lower left
  • oil on board
  • 27 by 44cm., 10¾ by 17¼in.

Provenance

Estate of the artist
Peppy Arapakis, Athens (a gift from the artist's wife on 27 November 1933. Peppy Arapakis was married to Ioannis Arapakis, a medical Doctor and Mayor of Kallithea); thence by descent to the present owner

Condition

The board is flat and even. This work is overall in good original condition and is ready to hang. Ultraviolet light reveals a couple of tiny pinhead-sized spots of retouching in the right of the sky, and no other visible retouching. There are a couple of diagonal harline incisions left of centre in the foreground (visible in the catalogue illustration), which could be the artist's original, a very light scratch in the middle-distance in the right, and a tiny dent in the board in the sky above the hill. The work's appearance could likely be enhanced with a surface clean if desired. Held in a black-painted frame, with gold-painted corner ornaments and a gold-painted inner accent.
