Catalogue Note

The present work is a preparatory study for Alma-Tadema's oil painting, Joseph, Overseer of Pharaoh's Granaries (1874, Dahesh Museum of Art), and which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1874. Based on the Old Testament’s Book of Genesis, it depicts Joseph, seated, in his role as the overseer of the royal granaries with a scribe working on the floor next to him, carefully counting each piece of grain.

In the final oil composition, Alma Tadema has filled every surface with Egyptian patterns, motifs and hieroglyphs, and the  present work gives insight into how the image is constructed with patterns abstracted into more simple forms.

This watercolor was last sold in these rooms in April, 1988, from the collection of Andy Warhol.
