Catalogue Note

The present work is a smaller version of Lesrel's 1873 Paris Salon submission of the same name. While Lesrel is known primarily for his paintings of cavaliers and costume paintings featuring seventeenth and eighteenth century dress, the classical scene presented in Le lis est mort relates more to the work of his teacher, Jean-Léon Gérôme. This work might also be read as a commment on the attempted restoration of the French Monarchy as the lily (fleur-de-lis) was replaced by the tricolor after the French revolution.
