Condition
The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.:
This painting is unlined and still on its original stretcher. Although there is some foxing on the reverse of the original canvas, there are no actual structural damages. There is one small recent loss in the lower center.
The work is probably presently dirty, and the varnish is slightly weak. Improvements would be realized if the painting were lightly cleaned. However, it is important to note that the artists thin glazes are very important and vital. Around the bent over figure on the left side, it can be seen that a small cleaning test has been made that clearly illustrates how this thin glaze can be damaged if cleaning is not very carefully approached. With the exception of this small area here, the condition seems very good. Great care will clearly be needed during any cleaning.
