Catalogue Note
The present torchères were created in 1872, and subsequently exhibited at the Paris Salon. The figures are a variation of the Portes-Lumières, described in the 1886 Barbedienne catalogue as Deux Femmes, Indienne et Persane. A similar pair of bronzes flanked the entrance of the Ferdinand Barbedienne family residence and were sold as Belles Orientales Aux Flambeaux at the Hôtel des Ventes, Enghien, March 4, 1984. A large Femme Persane was sold in these rooms, February 16, 1995, lot 47 for $225,000.
