Catalogue Note
Carrier-Belleuse used the signature A. Carrier prior to 1868 (changing it to A. Carrier-Belleuse henceforth). This beautiful and very finely worked bust must have been modelled early in the sculptor's career. Carrier-Belleuse sought inspiration in the work of Jean Goujon and the French Renaissance for many of his decorative designs. The present bust illustrates his use of Renaissance - derived motifs for his fantasy busts, which were eagerly acquired by the haute-bourgeoisie for domestic decoration. Carrier-Belleuse executed a series of busts of woman with elaborate diadems in their hair. A bust called Diadème was offered in his sale of 1887.
