Catalogue Note

Lanson was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome for this model in 1876 and it was later exhibited in the Exposition Universelle of 1878. The subject is fairly rare in 19th Century sculpture. Lanson has gathered inspiration from Renaissance models of Perseus, such as Cellini's, and combined it with a contemporary Romantic Realism to powerful effect. The Susse foundry edited the bronze in three sizes, of which this is the second one.
