Catalogue Note

In a compilation of early poetry entitled La Vita Nuova, Dante Alighieri declared his eternal love for Bice “Beatrice” di Folco Portinari. Beatrice has been commonly identified as the Florentine woman who is the inspiration for La Vita Nuova as well as one of his guides in La Divina Commedia, his most well-known work. With modest pose and dress, the present sitter carries a book whose cover is finely carved with Beatrice’s initials.
