Catalogue Note

Sigisbert-François Michel (1728-1811) was the elder brother of Clodion, who in 1774 exhibited two plaster ewers of virtually identical design at the Académie de Saint-Luc. Reproductions of these ewers were very popular in the 19th century. As well as bronze, they were also copied in porcelain. Wedgwood produced examples both in Jasper and Basalt, and the Sèvres factory also made similar ewers in porcelain; surviving examples can be found in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

Pairs of patinated and gilt-bronze ewers, attributed to Michel, can be seen in the Musée Nissim de Camondo, in Paris, and in the Wallace Collection, London.
