Catalogue Note
Julien Robillard worked in the 16th century Limoges enamel style, such as those by Leonard Limosin. His enamels are characterized by the use of dense white enamel with bright reds and blues in the scenes, which were primarily of a religious or allegorical nature. See Erika Speel, Painted Enamels, An Illustrated History 1500-1920, 2008. He is recorded at the Manufacture Royalle de Sèvres Enamel Studio in 1845-46 as an aide-emailleur. Examples of his work are in collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum, UK and the Hermitage, St. Petersburg.
