Catalogue Note

The majesty and strength of bulls appealed to Bonheur, which no doubt led him to exhibit over 10 models of cattle at the Paris Salon. Bonheur was dedicated to anatomical exactness. For example, his model of the Normandy Cow has enabled breeding experts to see how little the breed has changed in over a hundred years. Taureau Chargeant was shown at the Salon in 1865, together with a pendant model of a standing bull. Casts of the pair were ordered for the Sultan Abdul-Aziz's Palace in Constantinople.
