by Frederick Alfred Rhead, signed monogram FR, each reserved on the front of the gilt-starred chocolate brown-ground body with a gilt-edged oval panel decorated in white slip with a putto imprisoned behind bars, the reverse with a vase of flowers within a window, gilt crowned MINTONS globe mark, impressed MINTONS and year cypher for 1869.

Condition

A approximate 2-in. section of the rim of one vase has been broken into at least 2 pieces and restored back and re-gilt along the edge; the overspray extends completely around the rim and down the neck on the interior and exterior of the vase. The rim of the other has a very minor pinhead chip to the rim but is in otherwise generally good condition.

Frederick Alfred Rhead (1856-1933) was active at Minton from 1870, when we was first apprenticed to Marc Louis Solon, to 1877, when he left the factory and joined Wedgwood.
