Catalogue Note

As a successful sculptor and ceramist working in the Art-Nouevau style, Gustave-Joseph Chéret (1838-1896) provided various designs for Cristallerie de Baccarat and worked at Sévres under the apprenticeship of Albert Carrier-Belleuse. He succeeded Carrier-Belleuse in 1887 as the director of the National Sévres Manufactory. The present vase is after his bronze model titled 'Frogs', an example of which is in the permanent collection of The Royal Pavilion, Brighton Museum and Art Gallery.
