Catalogue Note

Seraphin Denécheau studied under the great French sculptors François Rude (1784-1855) and David D'Angers (1788-1856). He exhibited on a regular basis at the Paris Salon from 1859, and his Femme carréssant une chimère was noted at the Paris 1867 Exposition Universelle. An artist of portraits, mythological and allegorical groups, he had numerous commissions from the French State, the Musée du Louvre, the Opéra de Paris, the Gare du Nord, and a number of Parisian churches.

This rare marble version of his Diane couchée sur un croissant de lune exhibits a beautifully carved and polished surface. The supple quality of the goddess' skin is enhanced by the contrast with the smooth arc of the crescent moon. Denécheau has balanced the group on a bank of clouds, creating the illusion that Diana is suspended in the air. The marble is distinguished by its attractive pink marble base. A bronze version of the present model was formerly in the collection of Rochelle Sepenuk and was sold at Sotheby's New York in her Estate sale on 21 October 2008, lot 53. The spelling of the signature is consistent with the sculptor's other bronzes.
