Provenance

Christie's, London, 11 November 1988, lot 544

Condition

The board is slightly unevenly cut. There is very minor traces of slight surface dirt, and one or two very minor slight scuffs to the matt grey pigment, visible in the bottom right hand quadrant and in the centre of the top edge. There is a very minor fleck of slight loss to the centre of the extreme bottom edge, with a further very minor fleck of loss and scuffing to the bottom left corner, only visible upon close inspection. This excepting the work appears to be in very good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals some isolated spots of fluorescence to the matt grey pigment. Float-mounted on a linen textured background, and set within a silvered frame.

Catalogue Note

The 1962 dedication is the date the work passed from Lanyon to 'Frank'. The work itself was completed in 1958, the same year as a number of other paintings Lanyon made of the model Susan (two of which Seeger owned, Abbotsbury Susan and Susan, both sold in The Eye of a Collector, Works from the Collection of Stanley J. Seeger, 14 June 2001, lots 101 and 105).
