Catalogue Note

Alfred Dunhill inherited his father’s saddlery company in 1893, grasping the coming importance of the motor car, he renamed the business Dunhill’s Motorities, with the slogan ‘Everything for the car but the motor’. The brand expanded rapidly, moving into the top end of the market with a range including not only motoring accessories but attire. In 1903 Dunhill offered their first dashboard timepiece for sale, in 1907 Dunhill opened tobacconists in Duke Street St James’s, becoming the preferred supplier of George V and Winston Churchill, in 1921 Dunhill opened a store in New York followed in 1924 by Paris. Since then the Dunhill name has been synonymous with men’s fashion and luxury goods.
