A functional and decorative object. There are old marks, scuffs and scratches notably to the legs and particularly the toes. One of the securing turned bars at the base with an a repair and small loss at the fracture point. Acquired from Christie's London, Fine English Furniture, lot 37, 19.3.1987.

The design for the offered lot, or a stand very like it was produced by W. Smee & Sons. The company published a catalogue 'Designs for Furniture' from 1850 to 1855. These were hugely successful with the burgeoning middle classes and set a pattern for 'Trade' catalogues that was to last some time. They were retailers as well as wholesalers and associated with work of high quality exhibiting at a number of International Exhibitions. Interestingly E. W. Godwin was one of their early designers.
