Catalogue Note
The 'Four Accomplishments' in Chinese tradition practised by scholars and members of the ruling elite consist of the cultivation of musical talents (koto), chess-playing (go), calligraphy and painting. In Japan, this theme was especially popular in Edo-period literati painting that typically depicted the Four Gentlemanly Accomplishments being practised in outdoor settings.
