Condition
The canvas is been relined and the paint surface is in very good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. The left and right most stretcher bar marks are fvery slightly visible in the paint surface. There is surface dirt and yellow vanish overall. Examination under ultraviolet reveals some scattered flecks of minor cosmetic retouching and strengthening. Otherwise a mottled vanish impedes inspection. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good overall condition.

Catalogue Note
A signed version dated 1727 of near identical dimensions was presumably in the collection of Henry Hoare at Stourhead as it was sold in the Stourhead Heirlooms sale of 1883 (2 June 1883). That picture was most recently on the market London, Christie's, 7 April 1995, lot 5 (with it's pendant 'A Maid buying vegetables') making £21,850 for the pair. Another reduced version on a copper support showing only the fishmonger was sold London, Christie's, 8 December 1995, lot 220.
