Catalogue Note
John Blades was renowned for the quality and intricacy of his glass design. After establishing his showroom in London’s Ludgate Hill in 1783, he formed a notable partnership with the architect John Buonarotti Papworth (1775-1847), with whom he collaborated upon sophisticated designs for his glassworks. Blades’ business flourished and along with work for the highest echelons of British society, principally with work for George III but also the Second Earl Grosvenor. The firm was also celebrated for its presence abroad particularly in the Middle East and India, even establishing a Calcutta franchise, Blades and Matthews.
