Condition

Attached with a number of old hinges to a board. There is some discoloration to the four edges of the sheet, most probably due to an old mount. Generally the sheet is in good condition. There is some buckling to the vellum in places however this does not detract from the overall aesthetic. The medium itself is fresh throughout.

Catalogue Note

In 1786 Redouté was appointed draughtsman to Queen Marie-Antoinette's Cabinet, however it was not until a few years later whilst under the patronage of the Empress Joséphine that some of his greatest achievements were made.

Passionate about her famous garden at Malmaison, Joséphine tirelessly patronized a team of the foremost gardeners and as the leading botanical artist of his time Redouté was employed to record the wonderful array of flowers. His delicate studies of roses, of which the present lot is a fine example, are among his most popular and sought after works.
