Description
- Edouard Detaille
- Deux soldats de la guerre de 1870 (Infanterie de ligne et génie)
- (i) signed and dated EDOUARD DETAILLE / 1877 (lower right); (ii) signed and dated EDOUARD DETAILLE / 1874 (lower right)
- both oil on canvas (unframed)
- (i) 34.5 by 22cm., 13½ by 8¾in.; (ii) 39 by 27cm., 15½ by 10¾in.
Provenance
Sotheby's, London, 30 May 1984, lots 217 & 219
Condition
The overall appearance of the two works is good .
(i)
The canvas has been relined. There is a small dimple in the canvas above the soldier's head. Ultraviolet light reveals strokes of retouching primarily in the background in the upper half of the sky, including along the upper framing edge.
(ii)
The canvas has been relined. There is a very small dent near the left framing edge in the centre with associated minor paint flaking. Under ultraviolet light the varnish fluroesces evenly, and there appears to be some subtle fluorescence consistent with retouching notably in the background to the left of the man's face, below his right foot, and in the lower right corner around the signature.
Both works are sold unframed.
