Catalogue Note

With winding key.

The present lot is part of a small number of globe timepieces made by Antoine Redier of France.  Redier (1817-1897) was an eminent maker and known for his many horological innovations. For more on this maker see, Tardy, Dictionnaire Des Horologers Francais, 1972, pp 546-548.

Redier's globe timepieces were produced in two series. The present lot belongs to the second series.  The characteristics of this series include winding by means of a double pronged key inserted into the base and counter clockwise rotation of the globe.  The time is manually set by moving the hand.

The timepieces in the earlier series are wound by simply rotating the globe counter clockwise. Time setting is achieved by rotation of the equatorial ring.
